double coupon

Here’s a letter from a reader I got back in July, I thought I’d re-post this since I’ve had several new readers asking me about photocopying coupons:

I am a loyal follower of your blog since I started couponing in May of 2011. Recently I have run into a “gooey situation” and was hoping you could give me your expert opinion regarding my account with SS.com.  I think my “cookies have crumbled” because I tried to print some Q’s from there a couple days ago and was denied. I recieved a screen saying something like “Application Security Warning Access Denied” and it gave me a reference number and told me to contact them via e-mail to resolve this issue. In their troubleshooting area there was a topic that said my account may have been temporarily disabled due to fraudulent “copied coupons” which nearly made me choke up “chocolate chips”.  I sent them repeated emails and still havnt recieved a reply. I did a little investigating of my own because I was sharing coupons with some friends who have denied copying any of them and I have had the occasional scuffle with “grouchy mean” managers at a couple stores in which I wrote their Supervisors and Corporate Offices complaints because they had my patients wearing “wafer” thin and was worried they may have set me up somehow. I started to go through my sales reciepts to see if any SS.com Q’s were used during any transactions that had to do with these “cookie cutter” individuals but didn’t find anything. I then decided to follow the “crumb trail” of Q’s that I have used from SS inserts and I found one for …”!!WhoNu Cookies!!”… that was labled as prohibited in NV my homestate {:o([. I felt like “tossing my cookies” because I didnt read the fine print and neither did the store associates that accepted them with doublers making for some great cookie deals. WHONU???? Being kinda new at this I never expected to recieve coupons that were restricted in Nevada in my Nevada mailbox! I used alot of these at Albertsons during the Double Coupon Event Last Week at least 8 or 9 and in one particular transaction I used a BOGO and 1/1 together which made them $.25 cents ea for two pkgs. I think these may have been the culprits which “soured the milk” and left me with “chocolaty evidence all over my teeth”…. but i’m still not sure so I was wondering….Have you come across any similar situations like this within the “Cuckoo Community”? Any idea of what I can expect or what I should do after getting busted with my hand in the “cookie jar”? I would hate to have legal troubles over “couponing for cookies” considering I try so hard to practice couponing Legally and Legitimatly. I was just so “charmed by cheap cookie deals” and now I feel “sandwhiched” by fear! It’s times like these that I (almost) wish I was “diabetic”… so any advice you could offer a poor poor innocent “cookie crook” would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You so much for all your hard work and for educating us “cookiecuck-I-I-mean “CouponCuckoo’s” 🙂

SweeetTeeef.

Deidre’s Take: Here at Cuckoo for Coupon Deals we never photocopy coupons! If you are in a coupon train or any other way of exchanging coupons, never exchange internet printables!  You never know if that other person is going to photocopy them, and since they were printed from your IP address YOU could be in huge trouble.  Not only might you not be able to print coupons anymore, the CIC may choose to prosecute you!

Ask CFCD Readers: Any advice for Sweet Teeef?

First, every person who calls their Kmart or asks an employee in-store if they are participating in the double coupon event is told they aren’t. BUT when you scan your Shop Your Way Rewards card, then buy your items the coupons are automatically doubled.  So ignore the employees- Kmart simply hasn’t trained them on this issue.

Second, it is being reported that Kmart is doubling BOGO free coupons this time! The coupons must be for $.99 or less.  Last time they weren’t, but their ad didn’t state anything about it this time. So here are some cuckoo deals (your mileage may vary as this is a rumor I’ve heard from readers):

On top  of the FREE hand sanitizer coupon (in the Shop Your Way Rewards coupon booklet, a different place then the coupons I’m about to tell you about.) Check your Kmart for their monthly ad which has coupons for free products, when you spend over $25 in a transaction.  This is usually before coupons, and you can only use one Super Coupon for a freebie per $25, so you may want to break up your transactions accordingly!

Plus, I went to Kmart and found 4 more deals which have been added to my Kmart Double Coupon masterlist!

Here’s my fav:

  • Use $0.50/1 Angel Soft Bath Tissue from 5/15 Red Plum insert
  • Final price: $4.00 ($0.16/regular or $0.33/double roll) after doubled coupon

– as you can see on my price points list, this is a stock up price!

You all all know from my “Double Coupons” post that stores get fully reimbursed for coupons.  If a $1 off coupon is doubled to $2, the store gets $1 back from the manufacturer, and pays for the $1 doubled out of their own pocket.

I often post deals with double coupons, and how when you double it you get a great deal.  But someone notices sometimes coupons saying “do not double” or DND on the coupon.  Coupons often say this or “Do Not Triple” on them.

What is the reason a coupon says “Do Not Double”?

Sometimes a coupon says “5” as their first number.  This means that even if it says “Do Not Double” on the coupon, it will still double automatically! If it says “9”, it will not double automatically.  In the video I show you where to look for that number on the coupon. It is up to your store’s coupon policy to determine if your store will double those coupons or not. UPDATE: It doesn’t matter anymore about that as the new barcode system is out.

The reason some coupons say “Do Not Double” is because manufacturers want to be clear that they will not cover the costs of the doubling, and are only reimbursing the store for the face value of the coupon. There are certain cases where a coupon may say $.50, and a store will double it, and the manufacturer will reimburse the store the whole $1!  But in most cases, they will only reimuburse the store $.50, and they put “Do Not Double” to be clear that is how much they will reiumburse the store.

When a store has a double coupon day or always does them, they know they are not going to be reimbursed for anything other then the amount on the coupon.  So the store should accept that coupon in their store promotion since nothing is different about the amount they will be reimbursed as opposed to any other manufacturer’s coupon.

Here’s a list of store coupon policies and if they double or not!  Example: Kmart will double DND coupons.

What are your thoughts on this??? I’d love to hear them!

Part of the ABC’s of Couponing Guide

What is a Double Coupon?

First, let’s start with what double coupons aren’t.  I have heard people think you are using two manufacturer coupons on one item.  That is illegal and it not what double coupons mean.  Second, I have heard people think it simply means coupon stacking (when you use one store coupon and one manufacturer coupon on one item).  Stacking is valid and legal at many stores, but this is not what double coupons mean.  There is no such thing as a “double coupon”. What there are, however, are stores that allow you to double a coupon.

You use the same coupons you find in your local Sunday paper or print online.  Certain stores will let you double the value of the coupon.  When you redeem the the coupon at your local store during a double coupon promotion you will get twice the value of the coupon taken off the one item. If a coupon on a package of Huggies is $.50 off, you’ll get $1.00 off your package of Huggies.

Some coupons say “do not double” – read my post on Do Not Double coupons, why they say this, and why you can still double these in most cases!

When a store “doubles a coupon”, the store still only gets refunded the value of the coupon from the manufacturer.   They take the extra amount they doubled out of their own pockets, as an advertising expense.

You can use double coupons to get high value items free!  If a razor is normally $8, but is on sale for $4 (or on sale for $8 and is BOGO free), and you have two $2 off coupons, and your store doubles up $2, they would take off $4 for each razor, and then you would get both razors free!

Do you have a list of which stores double coupons?
Some stores don’t advertise that they double- so make sure to ask!   Other stores only double on certain days of the week, every week.  Kmart doubles randomly, and sometimes it is up to $.99 and other times it is up to $2.00, they just advertise it in their weekly circular.   Please leave a comment and let us know which stores in your area double, so we can create a master list.  Here is a list of over 20 stores and whether they double or not is listed on their policies page.

Know the rules of your store before you shop:

  • The store may limit your total coupons used to no more than 75 (or another number) per transaction or visit.
  • Stores may limit you to no more than 4 coupons for the purchase of 4 of the same items.
  • Each store doubles to different amounts; some stores double coupons $.50 and under, other stores double coupons up to $2.00.
  • Some stores won’t let you double coupons on clearance items.

Sharing is caring: Don’t go crazy and buy 100 of an item and clear the shelf.   If you know a great deal is coming, ask your store to order you extra of the item.

Tips for making your trip less stressful for you (and the cashier):

  • Bring the stores circular ad that advertises the double coupons. Some cashiers don’t know about their own stores promotions.
  • Have your coupons out and ready to scan before you get to the register. Put the same items together when checking out, and have your coupons in the same order as your products are being scanned.  Sometimes when items don’t match-up and the cashier has to scan the register tap to find them, this will make it easier for them to find the coupons and products because they are in order.
  • Hand the cashier each coupon one-at-a-time so that you can verify that non stick together and you are getting all your savings.

Do I have to pay taxes on items I get for free?
This varies by store but most registers will still ring up the total tax due.
