Part of the ABC’s of Couponing series

Understanding Crabby Cashiers

TLC Extreme Couponing Effect

People are getting upset when they start out couponing and aren’t spending $.03 for $2,000 in groceries.  People’s expectations have become unrealistic; leading them to unethical and sad behavior.

People start out couponing breaking all the rules, some of which are:

  • Taking newspaper inserts out of papers: whether it is taking inserts out of Newspaper stands, or out of your neighbors papers, it is not “taking” it is “stealing”!
  • Trying to use two manufacturer’s coupons on one product.  Even if they are for different amounts, you can never do this!
  • Trying to use a manufacturer’s coupon on the wrong product.  This is highly unethical, maybe even illegal…
  • Trying to use store coupons at stores that don’t accept competitor coupons.
  • People get mad at cashier’s for not accepting coupons.  People are starting to throw fits even.

Weeding Good From Bad

And that brings me to my main point.  If you’re a cashier, you are suddenly thrown a whirlwind of people trying to use coupons unethically and you have to try to weed the good from the bad coupons.  So let’s all start being a little nicer to cashier’s!  It’s not their fault if their store has a bad coupon policy.  It’s not their fault if a coupon doesn’t scan.  It’s not even their fault if they don’t know their own store’s coupon policy. Usually, it is their manager’s fault for lack of training.

Be Nice

With the TLC effect, cashier’s are getting trained to scrutinize every coupon better and hopefully they can help cut out coupon fraud.   But let’s give them the benefit of the doubt and not get emotional over things not going our way at the register.  Even the best couponers find that for some reason or other coupons they were planning to use don’t get accepted.  There will be more deals.  You are still saving more then before you started couponing.

Be a happy couponer!  Bring a copy of your store’s coupon policy with you to the store and kindly explain to them if they are in the wrong.

People often ask how I find so many freebies. One way is by visiting My Savings Freebies page.  For example, I just saw on My Savings that today Tide is doing another giveawayat 3pm Eastern Time for their Tide Stain Release. Like Tide on Facebook and click the ‘Challenge’ tab. There will be 10,000 samples.   I got this last time and the packet came with a bunch of stain releases! That’s a great deal.  They also have printable coupons.

But what is different about the My Savings site?  They have a call-in freebie section! So if you are out of printer ink, you can’t print more freebie coupons, you can checkout this section for companies who offer freebies/coupons if you call them!  This is something new to me and I can’t believe I didn’t know there was a list of places you could call companies to request your freebies and coupons as well.  There are a lot of magazines on that list too.

Part of the ABC’s of Couponing ebook

Here’s some coupon savings calculators and spreadsheets to help you calculate your spendings and savings.  Some things to keep in mind:

  • How much did your coupons cost? I go on a per-month basis.  I spend about $17 a month getting 4 copies of the Sunday newspaper each week.   So when I calculate my savings at the end of the month I subtract $17 from my amount saved.
  • How much extra gas did you use? Often driving to multiple stores to get deals uses more gas then a regular shopper.  This should also be calculated.
  • How much ink and paper did you use? I normally get paper free after rebates at Office Max and Staples, so my only cost is ink.
  • Do you insure your stockpile? Some people have insurance on their stockpiles, well you need to subtract that from your savings.  (I do not personally but some people on Extreme couponing said they do…)
  • Lost time: you can’t put a dollar amount on this.  Sometimes deals take too long to do for the amount you are saving.  Never let couponing take over your personal, family, and spiritual life.

With all that in mind, are 100% savings possible?? YES!  Some deals you end up making money on, which cover your gas money to get to the store. Also, with online deals 100% savings are easy to calculate and I post as many of those as I can find!  But there’s tons of amazing deals in-store too.

There are tons of survey companies out there where you can get paid for taking online surveys; and some are better then others.  I would love if readers could chime in and let everyone know which is their favorite!

Personally, my favorite is Pinecone Research as the surveys pay $3 per each one and you get paid every time.   And they don’t send you surveys you don’t qualify for! Currently, they are not taking applications – but as soon as they are again, I will let you know! They are finally taking applications again!

2nd Favorite: Another reputable one is Opinion Place: You are told up front how long the survey will take and what you will be paid.

UPDATE: My people have commented here and on Facebook that it is a great one too-  and they are taking applications now!  And Synovate I also recommend, which isn’t taking applications now either but I will let you know when they do again.

Opinion Outpost – this was not originally on my list, but people are loving it!

4th FavoriteSynovate!  Applications fill up quick when I post about them! Here’s what my readers have had to say about them:

I have been a member for 8 months now and love it. I get new products randomly-like pasta sauce, shampoo, paper towels. I also have take a two-week survey study where I got $25 at the end. I love it!

I joined them last time. I love their site, and they have EXCELLENT customer service. I was sent a survey for my 15 year old daughter to do, but when she clicked on it it said “Thanks for participating!” LOL I emailed Marie and she credited my account anyhow~!

That’s it.  I haven’t found anything else worth the time….

Ones with bad reputations:

  • Valued Opinions: Their claim “For every survey you complete you’ll receive up to $5 and if you qualify for specialist surveys, you can earn up to $50 for each.”  Review: “So my biggest complaint about this website, is getting numerous Emails about surveys. You go there, answer 2 dozen questions about certain items, and then at the end either tell you you don’t qualify, or no longer need any more applicants.”
  • Dollar Surveys: I wouldn’t recommend this one because you have to take surveys to see if you qualify for surveys, and it can waste your time.
  • Surveyhead: I wouldn’t recommend this one because it has bad reviews online; again you have to take surveys to see if you qualify for surveys.  And you have to reach certain payment thresholds, supposedly once you get close to cashing out, then no more surveys are available for you.
  • Toluna: This one also has horrible reviews and it takes several surveys to even make $1.
  • My least favorite is Inbox Dollars as they send you tons of annoying emails and you get like $.05 per click.

  •  I haven’t tried this one.  Please leave a comment and let me know if you’ve tried it out!

Ask CCD Readers: Please chime in if you have experience with these or any other survey sites!

Important: I forgot my cell phone (aka camera) so I couldn’t take a new picture, this one is from last time I saw cheese  on sale at Walmart.  When I was there today, Great Value Colby Jack 2 lbs of cheese was $4.98 (down from $8.32) and Great Value Mild Cheddar 2lbs was also $4.98.   Now in Utah and Idaho there is a coupon for $1 off 2 lbs. of any brand of cheese on  Zip 84660. That makes these $3.98 each. The shelves were being wiped out quickly. Now all by me lol! I just got ONE.  I have heard people freeze cheese but I personally like it fresh.

Since we’re on the topic of cheese…

There are 5 coupons that can be printed 2 times each. Use zipcode 37066.  These say “redemable only at Publix” on the coupon.
$1 off Sargento Pepper Jack Cheese Sticks
$1 off Sargento Colby Jack Cheese Slices
$1 off Sargento Shredded Cheddar Cheese
$1 off Sargento Pepper Jack Shredded Cheese
$1 off Sargento Colby Jack Cheese Sticks

Thanks, Coupon Centsation for the cheese coupons heads up!
