When Mickey D’s and just about every other fast food joint opened up the breakfast market, there was “much rejoicing” (to steal a line from Monty Python). Finally, the ‘grab and go’ breakfast was a reality and it made life easier for the masses. Unfortunately, though, those quick meals are loaded with fat.
So, why not make your own? By whipping up a tasty breakfast sandwich, you can monitor the fat content and still have a meal that will get you through the morning. Throwing a breakfast sandwich together is easy and cheap, and with this week’s in-store specials at Smith’s, your breakfast sandwich costs next to nothing.
This recipe is basic – use your imagination and add bacon, sausage, ham or veggies for an extra kick . . . a little salsa and avocado will really spice it up!
L.A.’s Breakfast in a Flash! UsingSmith’s deals this week
1 egg ($1.25/dozen)
1 tsp. milk
Pillsbury Grand Biscuits ($.88)
1 slice of cheese (optional)
Fresh strawberries ($1.50/16 oz.)
1 tsp. sugar or 1 packet of artificial sweetener
Preheat and bake the biscuits according to package directions. Set aside.
Spray a small glass dish (such as an 8 oz. ramekin) with the cooking spray. Add one egg and milk to the dish, and beat with a fork or small whisk. Microwave on high for 1 minute.
Split baked biscuits and top with cooked egg. Top with cheese (optional).
Wash 3 or 4 strawberries and remove stems. Slice in half, lengthwise. Sprinkle sugar or sweetener on strawberries.
This recipe is as easy and cheap as it sounds – it tastes great and, for obvious reasons, it tastes fresher and much better than the drive-through fare. The breakfast sandwich alone is a whopping 21¢ each and when you factor in the strawberries, the entire breakfast will run you about 59¢.
Mickey D’s can’t beat that!
Can you believe it? A paltry 59¢ for a meal that will hold you for the entire morning!
