A lot of pet parents know how much trouble it can be dealing with a flea and tick problem on their furry family member. Fleas can be a big problem especially on dogs. It’s easy for pets to bring fleas or ticks into a space, but the challenge is getting rid of them. At any time of the year fleas and ticks can show up on animals, aside from any months where the temperatures are below freezing for long periods of time.

Do you ever wonder how does an animal get fleas? Simple, an animal can get fleas from anywhere outside. Fleas can live on any animal with fur such as dogs, cats, squirrels or other wild furry friends. It only takes a second for an animal with fleas to run through someone’s yard and lay an egg that will hatch in that person’s yard, giving the opportunity to now attach themselves to an animal. However, they don’t hang out on other animals. Ticks are another story, in tall grass ticks lie dormant until an animal or person walks by. Then the tick attaches itself to that animal or person causing problems.

Fleas and ticks can cause a variety of issues, all the way up to significant diseases. Constant scratching is the most common side effect for dogs when there is a flea problem. This is called dermatitis when fleas bite and inject their saliva into the animal’s skin causing the animal to bite & scratch. It is also possible for dogs to become anemic or even die due to blood loss since fleas feed on blood. Ticks on the other hand can cause different problems. Lyme disease as well as approximately fifteen other significant diseases are transmittable through ticks. They can all seriously injure or harm an animal.
