Here’s an email I just got about online fraud:

Deidre, I went to our bank today and our banker was encouraging me to open up a new account with new debt/visa account with just enough money in it for online orders. Like if I order a purse for $22 put $25 in account via online transfer. There is a lot of Fraud online this season and money is being stolen out of personal accounts. She said this way you are protected and can shop online safely.. What do you think?

I think it’s a smart idea.  Especially considering many banks will give you $25- $100 just for opening a new account with them (often a deposit is required).

ING Direct – $50 for opening a new checking account

Chase – Open a Chase checking account with Direct Deposit and get $100

NuVision Get $150 when you open a new free checking account at NuVision Federal Credit Union.

Also, check with your local banks.  Bank of American Fork in Utah is giving new customers $50 + donating $50 to the Utah Flash if you open an account with them.

Do you have any other tips for protecting yourself online this season? Or any other banks offering up great deals?
